Scottsdale , considered by many to be one of the most livable cities in the US, is the place most people associate with Arizona and the Phoenix area.  With a population of 239,000 (2006), Scottsdale is Arizona’s fifth largest city.  It enjoys a robust economy and a scenic environment. Old Town Scottsdale has many streets, stores and western art galleries evoking the old cowboy era.  In contrast, Scottsdale is also home to many nationally-known contemporary galleries such as The Bentley and Chiaroscuro.  This area includes many fine dining establishments with a cuisine to please every palate; as well as nightclubs and bars.  Streets are filled with walking traffic after 10 pm on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. It has also seen a renaissance in the last few years as the return to "city living" is sweeping the nation. Almost $2 billion in public and private funding has been invested in revitalization projects.  Hip new ultra-luxury condo towers and premium one-bedroom units have been selling for more than $1 million. Scottsdale Fashion Square Mall and the new Shops at the Waterfront offers an eclectic variety of shopping and dining.

North Scottsdale is currently the most actively developed area of Scottsdale.   Regarded as the most expensive area in Scottsdale, North Scottsdale encompasses that area to the north of Shea Boulevard and contains the McDowell Mountain Preserve, as well as most of the city's dozens of golf courses.  Each January, North Scottsdale hosts the Barrett-Jackson Auto Show, an auto enthusiast's and collector's auction with many exotic automobiles, as well as the TPC World Championship Golf Tournament.

The city is home to several technology firms, such as Motorola Research and Development and Medical Operations, General Dynamics C4 Systems, Taser International, and Internet giant GoDaddy.   World-renowned medical facilities include the Mayo Clinic and Scottsdale Healthcare.
